- Embroidered memorial patch created in memory of George C. Cain. The patch depicts a firefighter in bunker gear skiing through snow. Embroidered text on the patch reads: "In Loving Memory of | George C. Cain | FDNY | 9-11-01 | Tower Ladder 7." The patch is primarily green, with several shamrocks and a Maltese cross in the background.
- Historical Notes
- George Cain was born in Woodside, Queens. He spent several years in Colorado, working as a carpenter in warm weather and skiing in winter. In 1994, he joined the FDNY and settled in Patterson, New York. He ran the New York City Marathon in 1999 and was training for it again in 2001. On September 11, Firefighter Cain responded to the World Trade Center with Ladder Company 7. He was 35 years old.
Curator's Comment
George Cain’s family created this patch to honor major influences on his life: his love of skiing, his career as a firefighter, and his Irish heritage. George had close relatives from County Mayo and County Kerry in Ireland. While waiting for a job opening with the FDNY, George spent five years living in the ski resort town of Telluride, Colorado. He also taught his niece and one of his nephews to ski. This patch is one of several made as keepsakes for participants in an annual golf tournament organized in George’s memory.
