- Plastic PAPD memorial cup created in memory of Kenneth Tietjen. Blue printed text on the front reads: "In Memory of | P.O. Ken Tietjen | PAPD | September 11, 2001." In the center is an image of a PAPD badge with the number "1653." Text on the back of the cup reads: "Until We Meet Again."
- Historical Notes
- Teaneck, New Jersey, native Kenneth Tietjen lived in Matawan. He enjoyed riding dirt bikes with the son of his fiancée, Karen. Each year at Christmas, when Kenneth’s family purchased gifts for a needy family, Kenneth supplied a bicycle. He worked as a PAPD officer for nine years. On September 11, Officer Tietjen responded to the towers from the 33rd Street PATH station. He was 31 years old.
Curator's Comment
The Kenneth F. Tietjen Memorial Foundation was established in honor of a Port Authority Police Department officer who responded to the World Trade Center on 9/11. Later renamed Mini Horse Heroes, the foundation today maintains two miniature horses that work as therapy animals with people who have experienced trauma, including first responder families. For years after 9/11, the Tietjen family hosted a barbecue for friends and foundation volunteers on the Fourth of July, Kenneth’s birthday. Plastic cups imprinted with his name and PAPD badge were given to those who attended the inaugural barbecue in 2002.
