In-Line Skates

- Pair of Rollerblade brand in-line skates belonging to Melissa Cándida Doi. The skates are black and various shades of blue and they each have four teal wheels.
- Historical Notes
- Born in the Bronx, Melissa Doi lived with her mother in the borough’s Throngs Neck section. Melissa had studied ballet and had considered careers in dance and art before joining IQ Financial Systems and becoming a senior manager. On September 11, Melissa spoke at length with a 9-1-1 operator, describing conditions on the South Tower’s 83rd floor, where she was trapped. She was 32 years old.
Curator's Comment
While pursuing a career in finance in New York City, Melissa Doi liked to help those in need. Passionate about in-line skating, she offered lessons to children in her neighborhood and sometimes purchased skates for the kids she taught. Melissa especially loved skating in Central Park. She was also known to travel on Rollerblades the more than 10-mile distance between the home she shared with her mother in the Bronx and her office at the World Trade Center.
