- Wooden Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity paddle belonging to Todd Russell Hill. The front of the paddle has "Todd" printed on the handle with "Fall 88'" printed below with the fraternity's Greek letters printed over a green, yellow, and purple background in the middle. "Gamma Zeta" is printed above the fraternity crest at the bottom. On the back of the paddle is a long handwritten message to Todd signed "Your Lil' bro Andrew (Ice Cube) Schaffer fall 88.'"
- Historical Notes
- Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, Todd Hill lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Todd regularly put himself and his friends through what he called “no mercy” gym workouts. But after business trips as an account executive at QRS Corporation, he was known to treat himself to fudge sundaes. On September 11, Todd was at the World Trade Center’s Marriott Hotel on business. He was 34 years old.
Curator's Comment
In his fraternity at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Todd Hill became a “big brother” to Andrew Schaffer during the fall of 1988. Although Schaffer had joined Lambda Chi Alpha later than his peers, Todd made his “little brother” feel welcome. As part of initiation into the fraternity, Schaffer gave this personalized paddle to Todd with a handwritten message on the reverse side that commemorates their friendship. “All this stuff,” wrote Schaffer, referring to Todd’s approachability and trustworthiness, “is what being a big brother is all about—and you’re the best.”
