Fire Helmet, Recovered
- Description
- Recovered leather fire helmet belonging to David Halderman. The helmet is severely damaged, coated in dust and dirt, crushed and separated down the middle. The leather portion is missing from the backside of the helmet, revealing the hard plastic interior, also cracked and crushed. The front piece of the helmet is still partially attached with the identifier "18 | 10652" still visible.
- Historical Notes
- Native New Yorker David Halderman lived on Long Island. He enjoyed reading history and science fiction as well as bicycling and running on the beach. David also treated his nieces and nephews to trips to amusement parks. Like his father and a brother, David was a firefighter, working at FDNY Squad 18. On September 11, Firefighter Halderman responded to the Twin Towers with his unit. He was 40 years old.
Curator's Comment
David Halderman's crushed helmet was found on September 12, 2001, and was given to David’s brother, Michael, also a firefighter. As his recovered helmet sustained significant damage to the back, Michael believes his brother’s death was the result of the collapse and a strike to the head. Halderman’s body was recovered on October 25, 2001.
