Fire Badge
- Description
- Silver metal FDNY badge belonging to Robert D. McMahon. The badge is a Maltese cross with "847" in the center, "F.D." in the top cross arm, "N.Y." in the bottom cross arm, an image of a hook and ladder in the left cross arm, and an image of a fire hydrant in the right cross arm. This type of badge is typically attached to a dress uniform cap.
- Historical Notes
- Robert McMahon was born in the Bronx. He lived in Woodside, Queens, with his wife, Julie—who was pregnant—and their young son. Robert was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in painting and photography and frequented the art galleries near the FDNY firehouse for Ladder Company 20 where he worked. On September 11, Firefighter McMahon responded with his unit to the World Trade Center. He was 35 years old.
