- Description
- Tin case containing mathematical instruments belonging to Chandler Raymond Keller when he was a child. The case is light blue with printed text on the front: "Set of | KENT | No. 606 | Mathematical Instruments" and an illustration of a child using the instruments. Inside the lid of the case is printed "Tables with Metric Equivalents" and "Theorems." The case includes two compasses, a protractor, a set square, and a ruler. "C. Keller" is etched into several instruments.

- Redondo Beach, California, native Chandler Keller lived in Manhattan Beach with his wife, Lisa. As a boy, Chandler liked science and built and set off rockets in the backyard. As an adult, he worked for Boeing Satellite Systems as a lead propulsion engineer in its satellite launch program. On September 11, Chandler boarded Flight 77 to head home after a business trip to Washington, D.C. He was 29 years old.
Curator's Comment
From an early age, Chandler Keller showed an aptitude for mathematics and engineering. He shared this trait with his maternal grandfather, who handed down his mathematical instrument kit to Chandler. Fascinated with rocket ships, Chandler built and launched models from his childhood backyard in Manhattan Beach, California. After studying aerospace engineering in college, he became a propulsion engineer and project manager for Boeing Satellite Systems. On September 11, Chandler was returning to California after a meeting at the Pentagon. He was collaborating with the U.S. Department of Defense on a satellite project designed to monitor terrorist activity.
