Dog Harness
- Description
- Red dog harness with a black Velcro strip at the top used for a saddle bag and with an LED light attached to the front. There are four patches on the harness, two American flags and two blue shield-shaped patches with "DISASTER RELIEF" and "K-9" embroidered in yellow with the head of a golden retriever stitched in the center.
- Historical Notes
- Nikie, a golden retriever, worked at Ground Zero with his handler, Frank Shane. Trained by K-9 Disaster Relief, a humanitarian organization that uses dogs to help disaster victims, Nikie received credentials through the American Red Cross. Wearing a work vest, a bandana, and booties to protect his paws, Nikie roamed the site and respite centers with Shane. Offering comfort in a grim place, Nikie provided relief from the emotional stress of recovery work.
