- Carlisle, Pennsylvania native Mark Schurmeier lived in McLean, Virginia, with his wife, Ayako, and their young son. Before becoming director of strategic engineering at Freddie Mac, Mark helped develop an online investment system for the U.S. Treasury Department. On September 11, he was attending a financial technology conference at Windows on the World on the North Tower’s 106th floor. He was 44 years old.
