Curator's Comment
Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Waleska Martinez received her bachelor’s degree in computer science and business administration from the University of Puerto Rico in 1986. This t-shirt is a keepsake from the Intensive English Program at State University of New York, Oswego, which she attended the summer after graduation. The automation supervisor for the U.S. Census Bureau’s New York office, Waleska was headed to a conference when she boarded Flight 93. Though she lived far from Puerto Rico, her father considered her “the backbone of the family.”
