Digital interactive painting titled PALE MALE: A Pilgrimage by Roz Dimon. This digital painting is a backlit dura-transparency chrome in LED lightbox with accompanying interactive online narrative. Created from layering pictures in Photoshop, this digital work tells the story of Pale Male, the famous red-tailed hawk that took up residence on a Fifth Avenue apartment building and captured the hearts of New Yorkers. Other images include the Twin Towers, the lower Manhattan skyline, and a crucifix, where the words “LOVE ONE ANOTHER” are central.

Historical Notes

PALE MALE: A Pilgrimage was created post 9/11 by New York City artist Roz Dimon, a digital media artist who worked at The World Trade Center/Financial Center complex prior to the collapse of the towers. The artwork emerged from the artist's traumatic feelings post 9/11 when her studies in iconography inspired her to create a new kind of interactive multi-layered painting that invites the viewer into a deep and personal relationship. Anyone can immerse into its layered story—one that pits the sacred with the secular in a quest to find home when all is lost.

It is notable that the first print in the edition of this piece was purchased by the late Walter Liedtke, Curator of European Art for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to this, upon viewing PALE MALE, Smithsonian Arts editor-at-large Paul Trachtman wrote that the work represented a new dimension in the artistic landscape—connecting the old with the new, the digital with the spiritual, and the real with the virtual.
