- Description
- Alcoholics Anonymous nine year sobriety chip belonging to David Harlow Rice. Chip is embossed with the AA circle and triangle symbol representing the three legs of the AA legacy: "Unity | Service | Recovery." The slogan "To Thine Own Self Be True" encircles the triangle. In the center of the triangle is the Roman numeral IX for nine years of sobriety. The reverse side of the chip is engraved with the small circle and triangle symbol in the center surrounded by the Serenity Prayer: "God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to know the difference."
- Historical Notes
- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, native David Rice lived in New York City, where he worked as an investment banker with Sandler O’Neill & Partners. While in college, he had overcome addiction and later earned a Fulbright scholarship, which took him to South Africa. While studying there, he also counseled recovering alcoholics. On September 11, David was at work on the South Tower’s 104th floor. He was 31 years old.
