Baseball Cap

- Navy blue baseball cap with a yellow bill. The Secret Service emblem is embroidered on the front and "US Secret Service" is embroidered in yellow on the back. The cap is well worn and has a light coating of dust.
- Historical Notes
- Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting rescue and recovery operations. Some signed on with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, while others volunteered independently.
Curator's Comment
Robert Gayer was one of many volunteers who spontaneously joined the emergency response on 9/11. Like other workers, Gayer had to improvise and adapt his equipment to meet specific needs at the site, taping flashlights to his helmet to facilitate subterranean searches. He wore this souvenir baseball cap thinking it would help him gain access to the site.
