Curator's Comment
Charles Jones studied aeronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and astronautics at the U.S. Air Force Academy. His 24-year service in the U.S. military included work in the Air Force’s Manned Spaceflight Engineer program. While training to become an astronaut, he learned to scuba dive and developed a passion for underwater photography. After retiring from the military, he pursued both as hobbies, often taking underwater photographs on vacations to the Caribbean with his wife, Mary. On September 10, 2001, Chuck spent the day diving. On September 11, he boarded Flight 11 on a business trip for his position as a program manager at the security and aerospace company BAE Systems.
