- Historical Notes
- Brooklyn-born Myrna Yaskulka lived in New Dorp, Staten Island. She was the mother of three grown sons. Myrna enjoyed dancing to 1950s doo-wop music, seeing Broadway plays, and shopping—her favorite items were leopard-print clothes and pink rhinestone accessories. On September 11, Myrna, an executive secretary at Fred Alger Management, was at work on the North Tower’s 93rd floor. She was 59 years old.
Curator's Comment
Myrna Yaskulka’s family traced her love of fashion to her time working in retail. A colleague nicknamed her “leopard woman” after the spotted animal print she often favored, and her family estimated she owned over 100 pairs of sunglasses. Myrna tried to instill her fashion sense in her granddaughters, sitting for hours to allow them to style her and taking them to get their hair done along with her. Prior to 2001, Myrna had picked out her own cemetery plot—selected to guarantee that she would always be facing toward her preferred Bloomingdale’s clothing store.
