- Recovered Screen Actors Guild Associated Actors & Artistes of America/AFL-C10 membership card issued to John William Perry. The card is purple and includes Perry's name, member number, and an expiration date of 10/31/01. The card is slightly discolored.
- Historical Notes
- Freeport, Long Island, native John Perry lived in Manhattan. He was an NYPD officer with the 40th Precinct and a New York State Guard first lieutenant. John also held a law degree and served on the New York Civil Liberties Union board. John was planning to retire from the NYPD to work full time as a lawyer. Off duty on September 11, Officer Perry responded to the towers. He was 38 years old.
Curator's Comment
A friend described John Perry as a “free spirit in a cop’s uniform.” Before he put on that uniform, John had worked as an attorney and investigated child abuse cases. He continued to practice law during his NYPD tenure, building cases against officers who violated department rules. John also acted as an extra on TV and movie sets such as Law & Order and Godzilla. On 9/11, he was at NYPD headquarters filing retirement papers so he could resume work as a lawyer at a medical malpractice firm. When John heard about the attacks, he took his badge back and rushed to help.
