- Historical Notes
- Massapequa, Long Island, native Kathy Mazza lived in Farmingdale with her husband, Christopher. A former nurse, Kathy joined the PAPD in 1987 and became the first female commanding officer of its police academy. She taught emergency medical skills and championed a successful initiative to equip airports with heart defibrillators. On September 11, Captain Mazza responded to the towers. She was 46 years old.
