- Mayor's Office of Emergency Management World Trade Center Recovery Team identification card issued to Pia Hofmann with Turner Construction Company. The front features a photograph of Pia Hofmann on the right and the city's municipal seal on the left. Printed text on the card reads: "MAYOR'S OFFICE | OF | EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT | Pia Hofmann | WORLD TRADE CENTER | RECOVERY TEAM." The logo for Turner Construction is at the bottom.
- Historical Notes
- Pia Hofmann was an operating engineer with Local 14 of the International Union of Operating Engineers, working at Ground Zero during the recovery period. She primarily operated a heavy construction vehicle used to remove debris. After weeks at the site, Hofmann recovered the remains of a civilian and insisted that they be accorded the same honor in removal as had been previously reserved for the remains of uniformed responders. From that day forward, when civilian remains were found, a member of the clergy was summoned, an honor guard formed, and the remains draped with an American flag as they were carried from the site.
