- Historical Notes
- In the first months after 9/11, sports leagues and teams acknowledged the service of first responders. In addition to inviting emergency workers to games and donating to relief efforts, some teams incorporated tributes into their uniforms. Years later, these practices continue. In 2018, the New York Knicks wore basketball uniforms paying tribute to the New York City Fire Department at seven home games at Madison Square Garden. On the jersey and shorts are a version of the Maltese cross symbol used by the FDNY.
