- Description
- Red granite vase created in memory of Gary Shamay. The vase is laser etched and features a portrait of Shamay along with the New York City skyline. Carved diagonally along the vase is text: "GARY SHAMAY | SEPT. 11, 2001 IN MEMORIAM."
- Historical Notes
- Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Gary Shamay was a toddler when his family moved to the United States. He lived in the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn with his parents and brothers. Gary was taking classes toward a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering while working as a computer specialist for Cantor Fitzgerald. On September 11, he was at his office on the North Tower’s 104th floor. He was 23 years old.
Curator's Comment
Lev Shamay had the red granite vase laser-etched and carved in his brother's memory for the 10th anniversary of 9/11. The vase was a centerpiece during personal at-home commemoration ceremonies with his extended family.
