- Memorial bookmark created in memory of Richard Dennis Allen and Charles Francis Xavier Heeran. The bookmark includes photographs of Allen and Heeran with printed text: "What we love | we never lose. | All that we love deeply | becomes a part of us. | In loving memory | of our brothers, | Richie & Charlie, | a donation has been made to | Saint Francis de Sales | Prayer Garden | Lynn & Sean | December 31, 2005." A green tassel is attached to the top of the bookmark.
- Historical Notes
- Queens native Richard Allen lived in Rockaway Beach. He had been a lifeguard, sanitation worker, and substitute teacher before joining the FDNY in May 2001. On September 11, Firefighter Allen had finished an overnight shift at Ladder Company 15 and planned to go surfing. When he heard that a plane had struck the World Trade Center, he responded from his firehouse with Engine Company 4. He was 31 years old.
Charles Heeran was born in Far Rockaway, Queens. He lived in Rockaway Beach, where he helped out at his father’s restaurant, tending bar and running events. A Cantor Fitzgerald sales trader, Charles had been offered a promotion to the company’s London office but turned it down to stay close to family. On September 11, Charles was at work on the North Tower’s 104th floor. He was 23 years old.
Curator's Comment
Charles’s brother Sean and Richard’s sister Lynn were married on December 31, 2005. They created this bookmark in memory of their brothers.
