- American Red Cross Disaster Relief uniform vest. The vest is a gray-and-white smock style with the Red Cross logo on the upper right breast. On the back of the vest is a large red cross with "American Red Cross | Disaster Relief" printed below. This vest is covered in handwritten signatures and messages.

- Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting rescue and recovery operations. Some signed on with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, while others volunteered independently.
Curator's Comment
Rhode Island native Michael Sisto reported to his local American Red Cross chapter. After a few days of training, he was assigned to the kitchen at Floyd Bennett Airfield in Brooklyn. He was tasked with driving an emergency response vehicle to deliver meals and medical supplies to area fire houses. During the two weeks that Sisto volunteered he asked first responders to sign his Red Cross vest, imitating the act of asking a celebrity for his or her autograph.
