Greeting Card
- Description
- Father's Day card left at the 9/11 Memorial in memory of Richard J. Morgan. The card depicts the Superman logo peeking out from underneath a white dress shirt. Inside the card is a handwritten note: "Dear Dad, | Today, like every day I think of you and miss you. Oh, if only you were not so brave, for then you would be here beside me. And I might have a father. | Love Glenn." The card is dated 6/16/19.
- Historical Notes
- Native New Yorker Richard Morgan lived in Glen Rock, New Jersey, with his wife, Patricia. They had four grown children. A vice president of Con Edison’s emergency management department, Richard still descended into manholes and basements to work with his crews. On September 11, he was trying to reach an electrical substation and help firefighters navigate the system near the towers. He was 66 years old.
Curator's Comment
Richard Morgan was dedicated to his family. He assumed a second mortgage in order to send all four of his children to college and would give his undivided attention to his grandchildren at the dining room table. “Little kids think their dad is Superman,” reminisced Richard’s daughter Colleen “and I think our family was so defined by our dad.” For Father’s Day 2019, Richard’s son Glenn placed this Superman–themed card near Richard’s name at the south Memorial pool.
