Fire Helmet, Recovered
- Description
- Recovered leather fire helmet belonging to Michael T. Weinberg. The helmet is slightly misshapen, and the leather is cracked and dusty. There is a large hole in the front part of the brim. The front piece of the helmet is still attached, with its identifier "1 | 7485" clearly visible.
- Historical Notes
- Queens native Michael Weinberg lived in Maspeth. He played minor league baseball as a center fielder for Detroit Tigers farm teams before joining the FDNY. He was also a part-time model and had posed for an FDNY benefit calendar. A member of Engine Company 1, Firefighter Weinberg was off duty on the morning of September 11. When he heard of the attacks, he self-dispatched to the towers. He was 34 years old.
