Shirt
- Description
- Class B pale green short-sleeved uniform dress shirt with dark blue shoulder epaulets, each embroidered with a silver oak leaf insignia denoting the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The shirt is stained with jet fuel splashed across the front and covering the sleeves. The name tag is generally worn on the right breast pocket flap of the shirt.
- Historical Notes
- On September 11, 2001, U.S. Army Lt. Colonel Philip J. Smith was a Branch Chief at the Pentagon, with responsibility for supervising multiple staff members and managing core personnel functions. His workspace was a compartmentalized office area, 2D-450, which sat directly in the path of Flight 77. At the time of the attack, Smith was standing in front of a copy machine making photocopies for a meeting, when the plane struck the building. Smith was hit by a fireball and sustained burns to his face and other exposed skin. Despite his injuries, Smith administered first aid to other Pentagon employees and searched for additional survivors.
