- Recovered FDNY Ladder 20 front piece, part of a recovered and damaged fire helmet belonging to Sean S. Hanley. The front piece is dark red and features the number "20" in yellow. Its reverse side features faded numbers in white on a black background.
- Historical Notes
- Lifelong Staten Island resident Sean Hanley came from a family of firefighters including both of his grandfathers, his father, and a brother. Sean was a boxer who won a “Tough Man” match between FDNY and NYPD members and a family man who skipped a Las Vegas trip to babysit for his brother’s children. On September 11, Firefighter Hanley responded to the towers with Ladder Company 20. He was 35 years old.
Curator's Comment
Sean Hanley came from a family of firefighters. Both of his grandfathers, his father, and his brother were members of the FDNY. According to his father, Sean “really wanted to help people. That is our family tradition.” When Sean became a firefighter, he assumed his maternal grandfather’s badge number, 9137, and was assigned to his grandfather’s former firehouse, Ladder Company 20. On the morning of September 11, Firefighter Hanley had just finished a night shift when he learned of the attacks and responded to the World Trade Center.
