- Mixed media collage and oil on canvas titled September 11th by Elena Keller. The piece depicts images of the attacks, Ground Zero, recovery workers, and Osama bin Laden taken from period newspapers and magazines, then cut and copied to acid-free paper and attached onto the canvas with an acrylic matte medium. The images of the attack and its subsequent destruction are collaged into a dark-blue spiral shape that moves vertically across the canvas. Images of bin Laden and the perpetrators are placed outside the spiral in jagged shapes resembling lighting. The piece is primarily black and shades of blue.
- Historical Notes
- The mixed-media artwork September 11th, was conceived and painted by Elena Keller as an emotional response to the terrorist attacks, which had a long-lasting impact on the artist. The work, created in the artist’s studio in Congers, New York, is comprised of collage and oil on canvas. The collage component contains publicly available images from period newspapers and magazines.
Curator's Comment
Moscow-born Elena Keller (b.1951) has been creating non-figurative, abstract art for over four decades. A 1979 graduate of the 1905 Art School in Moscow (Moscow State Academic Art School), Keller has been a member of the Union of Moscow Artists since 1981. Her work has been the subject of ten solo exhibitions and over thirty-five group showings, and is represented in museum collections throughout Russia, Germany, Uzbekistan, and the United States in addition to private collections across Russia, Germany, United States, Finland, Holland, Switzerland, Canada, and Italy. Since 1993, Keller has lived and worked in the United States, residing in Rockland County, New York.
