- Two-disk CD album case created in memory of Suria Rachel Emma Clarke. The album is titled "Suria's Selection: Some of My Favourite Songs and Tunes." The album cover is green and features a color photograph of Suria at Alcazar Palace in Seville, Spain.
- Historical Notes
- Born in Sheffield, England, Suria Clarke—whose first name means “shining one” in Sanskrit—was known for her sunny smile and outlook. Suria had lived and worked in Brussels, Belgium, before moving to New York City in 1998. She settled in Brooklyn and became a vice president at eSpeed, a Cantor Fitzgerald subsidiary. On September 11, Suria was at work on the North Tower’s 105th floor. She was 30 years old.
Curator's Comment
For Christmas 2000, Suria Clarke and her siblings each created a mixtape of songs with personal meaning as a present for their mother. After 9/11, Suria’s family took “enormous comfort” in her selections and converted the tape to a CD. The notes Suria made to accompany her choices provide a glimpse of her personality, from a memory of her grandfather to the music she played when she wanted to “rampage.” Of one song, she wrote: “Can’t listen to this without feeling you can do anything you want to do.”
