Lapel Pin
- Description
- FDNY Engine 33/Ladder 9 lapel pin belonging to Martin N. DeMeo. The pin is a white shield shape with yellow enamel. "ENG. 33 LAD. 9 | Bowery 'U'" appears in red. In the center is a yellow Maltese cross with a figure of a cartoon-like fireman in the center with a beard and smoking a cigar. He is holding a hose and wearing a fire helmet.
- Historical Notes
- Born in Glen Cove, Long Island, Martin DeMeo lived in nearby Farmingville with his wife, Joan, and their two teenage children. Martin was a baseball fan and had collected hundreds of Major League players’ autographs on baseball cards and balls. A 16-year FDNY veteran assigned to Hazmat Company 1, on September 11 Firefighter DeMeo responded with his unit to the World Trade Center. He was 47 years old.
