Lapel Pin
- Description
- FDNY Engine 317/Ladder 165 lapel pin belonging to Martin N. DeMeo. The gold-colored pin is a Maltese cross with "ST. ALBANS | SLEEPLESS | Knights" printed in red enamel on the top and bottom crossbars. In the center of the pin is a figure of a cartoon-like firefighter with a long red mustache and eyebrows wearing bunker gear and a black fire helmet. A hose is at his feet, and he is holding up an axe. Flanking the figure are two bright orange flame shapes with "E 317" and "L 165" appearing in black inside the flames.
- Historical Notes
- Born in Glen Cove, Long Island, Martin DeMeo lived in nearby Farmingville with his wife, Joan, and their two teenage children. Martin was a baseball fan and had collected hundreds of Major League players’ autographs on baseball cards and balls. A 16-year FDNY veteran assigned to Hazmat Company 1, on September 11 Firefighter DeMeo responded with his unit to the World Trade Center. He was 47 years old.
