Lapel Pin
- Description
- FDNY Hazardous Materials Co. No. 1 lapel pin belonging to Martin N. DeMeo. The pin is a Maltese cross with multicolored enamel. "F.D.N.Y. | HAZARDOUS | MATERIALS | CO. NO. 1" is printed in red in the crossbars. In the center of the pin is a diamond with four quadrants of color (blue, red, yellow, and white) underneath a figure wearing a green Hazmat suit with a blue number 1 on the front.
- Historical Notes
- Born in Glen Cove, Long Island, Martin DeMeo lived in nearby Farmingville with his wife, Joan, and their two teenage children. Martin was a baseball fan and had collected hundreds of Major League players’ autographs on baseball cards and balls. A 16-year FDNY veteran assigned to Hazmat Company 1, on September 11 Firefighter DeMeo responded with his unit to the World Trade Center. He was 47 years old.
