Downtown Moves

Description

Line etching titled Downtown Moves (1993) by Richard Sloat. The etching is printed with black ink and depicts the view looking south down East Broadway towards the Manhattan Bridge. In the foreground, traffic and parked cars line the street with low-rise apartment buildings on either side. Beyond the bridge, at center, are the larger office buildings of lower Manhattan; the Twin Towers are depicted in the far back, rising beyond the edge of the print.

Historical Notes

Artist Richard Sloat lived in a loft apartment in the Lower East Side with his partner, Su-Li Hung. The two had met in the early 1970s at the Art Students League of New York. Often using the Twin Towers in their work, the couple initially earned a livable income by selling prints of their art on the streets of New York.
