Figurine
First From the Flames
- Description
- Bronze sculptural figurine titled First from the Flames depicting an artist rendering of Father Mychal F. Judge being carried away from the World Trade Center site by four uniformed men. Father Judge wears his friar robes, but his feet are bare.
- Historical Notes
-
After learning that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, Father Mychal Judge, chaplain to the FDNY since 1992, replaced his friar’s robes with an FDNY uniform.
Father Judge entered the North Tower to offer spiritual support and the sacrament of anointing the sick, commonly known as last rites. Seeing the carnage, he stopped to pray. He died after a hail of debris from the collapse of the South Tower penetrated the North Tower lobby.
This statuette is reminiscent of the scene captured by photographers of Judge being carried out of the site.
