Curator's Comment
Nidal Ayyad, an employee of Allied Chemicals/Allied-Signal Inc. worked as an engineer in the company’s oximes research and development division. The focus of this unit was chemicals used in pharmaceuticals, paints, aerospace and automotive engineering. Born in 1968 to Palestinian parents in Kuwait, Ayyad had immigrated to the United States with his family and studied engineering and science at Rutgers University. Soon after graduating, he became an American citizen and accepted a job at Allied Chemicals in his desired field.
On March 11, 1993, the 25-year-old engineer was arrested as a suspected terrorist and co-conspirator in the February 26, 1993, bombing at the World Trade Center. Ayyad used his corporate account at Allied Chemical to order the necessary explosive ingredients along with hydrogen tanks from ALG Welding Company, procured to enhance the bomb's destructive force. Ayyad and his co-conspirators were each sentenced to 240 years in prison, factoring in the combined life expectancy of the six people killed in the bombing.
