- Framed memorial tile created in memory of Jonathan Lee Ielpi. The primary image in the center is of Lee Ielpi at Ground Zero, wearing his fire helmet and holding a memorial bookmark depicting his son, Jonathan. The inset image in the upper left corner is a black and white photo of Lee with his fire house and a young Jonathan in the center. The inset image in the upper right corner is a portrait photograph of Jonathan. The lower left inset image is of Jonathan in bunker gear and the lower right inset image is of a building with "Jonathan Ielpi" posted on the side with another, smaller inset image of Jonathan as a young boy. Printed at the top of the tile in red is text that reads: "Dear Lee, Forever in our hearts..."
- Historical Notes
- A lifelong resident of Great Neck, Long Island, Jonathan Ielpi lived with his wife, Yesenia, and their two sons. Jonathan had played ice hockey since his youth. He worked as an NYPD officer before following his father into the FDNY. He was also an assistant chief at his community’s volunteer fire department. On September 11, Firefighter Ielpi responded with Squad 288 to the South Tower. He was 29 years old.
Curator's Comment
Lee Ielpi, a retired firefighter, worked at Ground Zero during the entire nine-month recovery effort searching for his son, Jonathan, and other victims.
