Quilt

Handmade quilt created in memory of three New York City Court Officers killed on 9/11, Thomas Edward Jurgens, William H. Thompson, and Mitchel Scott Wallace. The quilt design features a stars and stripes motif with the name of each officer stitched in blue on a red or white stripe. The New York State Courts embroidered uniform patch as well as a commemorative patch are attached towards the top of the quilt. Also featured is a stitched memorial inscription reading: “With abiding sorrow we honor the lost | And embrace those surviving. | With every stitch | We tender our gratitude” and the date “September 11, 2001.”

Bronx native William Thompson resided in New York City. His physical fitness regimen included playing basketball with his two sons, running regularly, and climbing stairs. A court officer with the NYS Unified Court System, William was also an instructor at the Court Officers Academy. On September 11, Captain Thompson responded to the South Tower from the Academy a few blocks away. He was 51 years old.

Brooklyn-born Mitchel Wallace lived in Mineola, Long Island. He was engaged to his girlfriend, Noreen. Mitchel was a trained paramedic and a volunteer firefighter. He was also employed as a court officer for the NYS Unified Court System. On September 11, Officer Wallace responded to the towers on his way to work and was seen aiding evacuees, still in his civilian clothes. He was 34 years old.

Born in Valley Stream, Long Island, Thomas Jurgens lived in Meadowmere Park with his wife, Joan. A trained emergency medical technician and volunteer firefighter, Thomas worked for the NYS Unified Court System as a senior court officer. On September 11, he was on duty near the World Trade Center. Officer Jurgens grabbed a medical kit and responded to the towers with his colleagues. He was 26 years old.
