- American Red Cross Disaster Relief uniform vest. The vest is a gray-and-white smock style with the Red Cross logo on the upper right breast. On the back of the vest is a large red cross with "American Red Cross | Disaster Relief" printed below. The white upper portion of the vest is covered in handwritten signatures and messages.

- Volunteers of every age, background, and ability flocked to Ground Zero, intent on supporting rescue and recovery operations. Some signed on with organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army, while others volunteered independently.
Curator's Comment
On 9/11, Cynthia Tackett followed news of the tragedies unfolding in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania from her home near Dallas, Texas. Feeling helpless and wanting to contribute in any meaningful way possible, she immediately called the Dallas chapter of the American Red Cross to join. Tackett received a core series of disaster services trainings and was deployed to New York City. Her daily responsibilities entailed driving between the five boroughs to pick up food, water, and relief supplies, which were subsequently delivered to various command posts and respite centers around Ground Zero. In her final week as a volunteer, she asked many Red Cross peers and volunteer first responders to sign her hard hat and vest, mementos of her time in New York City.
