North Tower Excavation

- Located at bedrock level in the 9/11 Museum are 18 steel column remnants which once formed the base of the north face of the North Tower.

- The North Tower soared more than a quarter mile into the sky, supported by steel columns anchored 70 feet belowground. The column remnants along the North Tower excavation corridor rose to form the north face of the North Tower. A total of 84 columns defined the tower’s one-acre perimeter and provided its main structural support.
Recovery workers sheared the columns to their current height during cleanup operations following 9/11. Many 9/11 victims’ family members viewed the column remnants as defining elements of the sacred ground where their loved ones had been killed. They joined with landmark preservationists to advocate for the column remnants’ designation as permanent historic assets of the World Trade Center site.
Within the 9/11 Museum, it is possible to walk around the perimeter of the former North Tower.
