Stephen Denny was an FBI Special Agent assigned to the Bureau’s New York Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). The JTTF was organized to investigate and combat domestic and international terrorist threats, as well as other criminal activity directed at high-level, elected, or appointed officials.

On the morning of September 11, 2001, Denny was at the JTTF offices on Broadway, approximately a half-mile north of the Twin Towers. Members of the NY JTTF were among the many local, state, and federal law enforcement officials headquartered near the World Trade Center who responded to the disaster. Denny arrived on the scene shortly before the collapse of the South Tower and sheltered in a nearby building. He witnessed the collapse of the North Tower from a short distance away. As night fell, the FBI’s New York staff realized that there was nothing more they could contribute. After being relieved of duty at the disaster site, Denny returned home. He removed his dust-covered clothing and placed them in a black garbage bag, eventually offering them to the 9/11 Museum as eyewitness artifacts.
