- Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps patch belonging to Richard Allen Pearlman. The circular patch is white with green embroidery. In the center is a cross with a yellow Rod of Asclepius and "1971" next to the cross. "FOREST HILLS VOLUNTEER | AMBULANCE CORPS" is embroidered around the cross.
- Historical Notes
- Brooklyn-born Richard Pearlman lived in Howard Beach, Queens. He had volunteered at a community ambulance corps since he was 14 years old and was to start emergency medical technician training in October 2001. An office clerk for Cooper & Cully law firm, Richard was on an errand in lower Manhattan on September 11. He joined the rescue effort and was seen entering the South Tower. He was 18 years old.
Curator's Comment
Richard Pearlman’s mother said that “his life’s mission was to help people.” His third-grade teacher recalls him helping in the school office during his lunch. As a Boy Scout, he earned the nickname “mother” for his sensitivity with fellow scouts who were injured or upset. At 13 years old, he joined the Forest Hills Volunteer Ambulance Corps. He was planning to begin professional EMT training at the age of 18 in 2001. While on an errand in lower Manhattan, Richard responded to the World Trade Center.
