- Child's handmade construction paper collage from The Calhoun School's "9/11: Through Young Eyes" visual narrative. The collage depicts a violent scene. There are two black-clad figures in the foreground. One figure holds a gun, while the other has been shot. Blood spews from the back of the wounded figure as he falls backwards toward the ground. The collage is captioned with typed text at the bottom that reads: "15. Some Arab-Americans were even murdered."
- Historical Notes
- After the 9/11 attacks, eighth-grade students at the Calhoun School went on a museum field trip to see The Migration Series (1940–1941) by Jacob Lawrence. The series consists of 60 paintings chronicling the mass movement of Black Americans from the rural South to the urban North during the early part of the 20th century. The students then produced their own collages about 9/11’s local impact inspired by Lawrence’s work. They examined many facets of their experience, from memorialization and blood donations to prejudice and the onset of war in Afghanistan.
