- Pair of Nunn Bush brand men's loafers. The shoes are made from dark brown leather and are covered in dust. The leather on the shoes is heavily worn, and the shoes have lost a lot of their definition and shape.
- Historical Notes
- Medical personnel arrived at the World Trade Center site throughout the day, anticipating that lifesaving measures would be needed. However, as hours passed it became evident that there were few survivors to be rescued.
Curator's Comment
Dr. James Wittig is a practicing orthopedic oncologist and the chairman of orthopedic surgery at Morristown Medical Center in New Jersey. On the evening of September 11, 2001, Dr. Wittig responded to Ground Zero as a local medical professional qualified to perform field amputations on survivors trapped beneath debris at the World Trade Center. He wore his hospital-issued scrubs and personal shoes as he ventured downtown from Bellevue Hospital to assist with rescue efforts underway at the disaster site. Not finding many in need of his medical assistance, he returned home to New Jersey, where he immediately removed his dust-covered clothing and stashed it in a bag.
