Safe Passage
- Description
- Foam core submission board designed for the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition in 2003, titled “Safe Passage.” This design plan features two hundred boats made to represent the idea that memorials are vessels of our memories and aspirations. Boats have served as a symbol of transition across cultures and time and have a particular connection to the history of Manhattan as a port city. The boats' design in this plan are modeled after the New Bedford-type skiff commonly used in the Hudson River. Each boat would contain the names of a dozen victims and rest on a meadow of grass sculpted to resemble waves. The boats are positioned to point towards the harbor and the ocean beyond it.
