- These shoes were worn by New York Daily News photographer, David Handschuh on 9/11. Handschuh was photographing the unfolding events when he was injured during the collapse of the South Tower. He saved the dust-covered shoes he was wearing.
Curator's Comment
Many professional and amateur photographers rushed to the World Trade Center on September 11.
War photographer William G. Biggart followed firefighters heading toward the South Tower and documented its collapse at close range. He was next to the North Tower when it collapsed 29 minutes later. Biggart was the only photojournalist to die on 9/11. His camera, with the film still intact, was found four days later, near his remains.
Independent photojournalist Catherine Leuthold focused her camera on evacuees and first responders near the North Tower. When the South Tower collapsed, she found refuge in a deli nearby. Covered in dust, Leuthold photographed her own reflection before resuming her documentation of the disaster.
