- Uniformed responders and disaster response team members often carried spare pins or patches bearing their group’s logo or motto. These emblems were exchanged as a gesture of friendship and appreciation. Suzannah B. Troy covered her jacket with the pins and badges she received from first responders and Ground Zero personnel in the months following 9/11.
Curator's Comment
An artist and self-described citizen activist, Suzannah B. Troy wanted to help her city recover from the World Trade Center attack but lacked the credentials needed for the rescue and recovery operations. Instead, she joined fellow New Yorkers who lined West Street to support emergency personnel traveling to and from Ground Zero. They offered smiles, hugs, and thank-you signs in a volunteer campaign that Troy described as "Gratitude with a New York Attitude."
Appreciative workers soon began giving these loyal supporters pins and patches reflecting their trade union and agency affiliations. Troy affixed hers to her jacket.
