- Trained as an emergency medical technician, Brian Van Flandern made his way from Queens to lower Manhattan to a first aid station on Church and Vesey Streets, near the World Trade Center. He acquired paper dust masks en route to the disaster site, where he tended to first responders suffering from smoke inhalation, eye irritation, and other injuries.
