First Aid Kit, Recovered
- Description
- Orange plastic first aid kit with a white handle belonging to James Francis Lynch. "WTC PAPD" is stamped on the top of the kit and "5335" is stamped in white on the front of the lid. "WTC POLICE" is stamped in blue on the bottom front side of the kit. One of the white latches that kept the kit closed is missing. The exterior of the kit is noticeably scuffed, bent out of shape, and does not close properly. The interior of the kit is fully stocked with first aid items: gauze bandages, Band-Aids, alcohol swabs, waterproof medical tape, an ACE bandage, sterile pads, etc.
- Historical Notes
- James Francis Lynch was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and lived in Woodbridge. He had a teenage son. James was a fishing enthusiast who held a charter boat captain’s license and was active in a local boat association. A 22-year veteran of the PAPD, on September 11, Officer Lynch was recovering from surgery. He left home and responded to his command at the World Trade Center. He was 47 years old.
Curator's Comment
On the morning of 9/11, Lynch, known as Jimmy to friends and relatives, was home on medical leave, recuperating from shoulder surgery. Despite his condition, Lynch responded to the World Trade Center from his home in New Jersey.
Lynch’s bunker coat and first aid kit had been found in his patrol car, damaged amid the wreckage of the South Tower. Months later, on December 7, 2001, Lynch’s family was notified that his remains had been recovered at Ground Zero. Found nearby were a baseball cap and flashlight, each marked "775," his PAPD badge number. Lynch’s family donated the coat, first aid kit, cap, and flashlight to the 9/11 Memorial Museum to honor his service and sacrifice.
