Lacrosse Stick

- Lacrosse stick belonging to Andrew Stergiopoulos. The stick is well worn from use, the shooting strings are dirty, and there is a lace from an ice hockey skate woven into the strings on the pocket.
- Historical Notes
- Growing up in Great Neck on Long Island, Andrew Stergiopoulos played football, lacrosse, and hockey. He cofounded his college’s lacrosse team. After graduation, Andrew moved to New York City and joined Cantor Fitzgerald subsidiary eSpeed, where in his first year he helped develop more than 20 financial patents. On September 11, Andrew was at work on the North Tower’s 105th floor. He was 23 years old.
Curator's Comment
By the time Andrew Stergiopoulos reached middle school, his passion for team sports, budding entrepreneurial spirit, and talent as an inventor were already in evidence. When his lacrosse teammates admired his playing, he explained that the key to his success was the way he tightened the net on his stick. He offered to “optimize” their sticks for a nominal fee. After graduating from George Washington University in 2000, Andrew accepted a position in the product development division of Cantor Fitzgerald’s eSpeed subsidiary. There, he was able to draw on his skills as an inventor, helping the firm develop patents for its financial products.
