- Historical Notes
- Queens native Michael A. Noeth lived at Fort Myer in Virginia. After earning an art degree, he entered the U.S. Navy and became a draftsman. In 2000, he joined the Navy Command Center. Besides his usual duties, he was commissioned to paint portraits of the 27 admirals who had served as Chief of Naval Operations. On September 11, Petty Officer Second Class Noeth was at his Pentagon office. He was 30 years old.
Curator's Comment
Michael Noeth was an Illustrator Draftsman Second Class in the U.S. Navy. Interested in ships and the visual arts, Michael took classes at the Art Students League in his native New York City as a teen and joined the Navy after earning a fine arts degree from the Fashion Institute of Technology. He created this landscape of American Samoa while serving aboard the USS Russell. After a tour on the USS Wasp, Michael was reassigned to the Pentagon’s Navy Command Center in 2000. In addition to his regular duties, he was commissioned to paint portraits of the current and former Chiefs of Naval Operations. Three were completed by the time of his death on 9/11.
