Bunker Pants, Recovered
- Description
- Recovered FDNY-issued bunker pants belonging to Matthew L. Ryan. The pants have reflective detailing around the ankles and reinforced quilted knee patches. The pants include red and blue suspenders.
- Historical Notes
- Brooklyn native Matthew Ryan lived in Seaford, Long Island, with his wife, Margaret. The couple had four children. To help his children build their vocabularies, Matthew challenged them to “Stump Mr. Ryan” by finding words he did not know. A 28-year FDNY veteran, he became Chief of Battalion 4 in 2000. On September 11, Battalion Chief Ryan responded to the World Trade Center. He was 54 years old.
Curator's Comment
Firefighters responding to fires wear protective clothing known as bunker gear, which is constructed of heavily insulated and highly fire-resistant fabric. Bunker gear greatly reduces the risk of burns and allows firefighters to remain at a fire longer than they would be able to wearing ordinary clothing.
